Saturday 12th May
A Celebration of the life of Florence Nightingale
Join us to celebrate the work and legacy of this pioneering nurse on her birthday. She came to prominence for her pioneering work in nursing during the Crimean War, where she tended to wounded soldiers. She was dubbed "The Lady with the Lamp" after her habit of making rounds at night. An Anglican, Nightingale believed that God had called her to be a nurse. Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment in 1860, of the world's first nursing school at St Thomas' Hospital in London.

Tuesday 14th May
Dido and Aeneas
"The Real Dido" It is the beginning of the 20th Century and the onset of war is looming. As the nightlife of London comes out to play, a fatalistic affair of the heart ignites, as all the city around them burns.
This brand new reimagining of the first truly English opera by Henry Purcell takes the drama of the 17th century stage and places is it firmly into the heart of a conflict that defined the century that would follow it. With a baroque ensemble and condensed cast, the production thrives on site-specific commissions, including Fishbourne Roman Palace and
Portsmouth’s HMS Warrior. A not-to-be-missed interpretation, the performance will also be followed by a post-show talk with the creative team and the company.
Tickets are £25,to include a glass of bubbly. The event starting times are 6:30 and 8:30. Please call 07873 179417 for more details, or click here. |

Dickens Bi-Centenary and museum -
With Portsmouth being his birthplace, the city is celebrating what would have been Charles Dickens' 200th Birthday throughout the year; with a range of events both organised by the Portsmouth City Council and private organisations.
Although Dickens spent very little of his early years in Portsmouth having been moved to Bloomsbury in 1815, his birthplace in Old Commercial Road though has been preserved by Portsmouth City Council circa 1809; something which Dickens' apparently failed to find in 1866 on a visit to Portsmouth. Usually only open April to September, the museum will be open throught the year.
