Known as the Garden of England, Kent was once the major source of fruit and vegetables for the southeast. It was also the country's major 'hop' producing region for the production of beer. This industry gave rise the many Oast Houses that are a distinctive part of the Kent landscape. During World War 2 the county had dozens of airfields which were used as the springboard for the airborne Battle of Britain. The coastline has many traditional seaside resorts such as Margate and Folkestone. The famous White Cliffs of Dover are close to Dover Castle, one the country's best preserved and fascinating for all ages. The closest point of England to mainland Europe, both Dover and Folkestone are popular ferry crossing points. To the west are the beautiful Romney Marshes where many rare birds still thrive. There are many pretty towns with their own unique histories and attractions such as Tonbridge, Royal Tunbridge Wells and Leeds Castle. |
