Royal Highland
Games - Highland Games are one of Scotland's most traditional
sporting events dating back over 1,000 years. The
"heavy events" element of Highland Games originates from villagers showcasing
their strength and prowess in competitions based around the activities of
their working lives, including throwing hammers, putting stones and tossing
tree trunks (today's 'Tossing the Caber'). Now the athletes must put in

Olympia Showjumping Championships - international equestrian event with a seasonal flavour. December
16-20 @ London Olympia Showjumping
Christmas Day - a celebration by the
Christian community of the birth of Jesus Christ 2000 years ago. Emotionally
charged services are held on the evening before, at around Midnight, known as
Midnight Mass at churches throughout the country. The day is also celebrated
by non-Christians, and focuses on the delivery of presents to all from the
fabled Santa Claus. December 25 (Nearly all shops close and public
transport ceases.)
Christmas Morning Swim - hardy types take to the water
in London Hyde Park's Serpentine lake to race over 100 metres for the Peter
Pan Cup. This traditional event has taken place every Christmas since 1864.
It starts at 9am 25th December @ Serpentine, Hyde Park
Boxing Day - a national holiday which is
traditionally a focus for sporting events throughout the country. December
26 (Limited public transport services.)
Hogmanay - last day of the year, New
Years Eve. A time for parties across the UK, but of particular significance
